While riding the freight train lines at 20 years old, Zander was eventually caught by CP railroad officials. In an attempt to evade the railroad police and a warrant, he wound up falling off a tank car, directly onto a railroad track. The train quickly barrelled down on his right hand, claiming four fingers but not his life. After rehabilitating and relearning to play the guitar, dive bar blues jams became his solace and established his taste for rockabilly music.
