Mighty Koan
As a teenager, Koan’s musical passion ignited upon hearing “Rich Girl” by Hall and Oates during a bus trip to a roller rink. In the late 1970s, amidst the emergence of New Wave, reggae, and ska, he delved into dissecting songs on his parents’ console. Influenced by bands like The Knack and Blondie, as well as cable TV music shows, he was captivated by the era’s energy and originality.
Koan remembers, “I would listen for hours to my parents’ ancient and gigantic music console which was complete with a record player, 8-track, radio, and more! I dove into this ‘headphone’ audio world, whereby I dissected all the layers of as many songs as I could. I was enthralled in discovering how each song accomplished its magic. The energy of that era literally hypnotized me!”
Transitioning from drumming in high school bands to songwriting, Koan explored audio production, releasing albums under the clever but hard to spell moniker ‘Nothingilistic’. Live performance became his focus after a promoter offered him a gig, drawing inspiration from performers like Chuck Berry. Dubbed “The Mighty Koan” by an announcer, his music spans reggae, pop, rock, ska, and new wave, characterized by kinetic energy and diverse influences.
Mark Boreen is the snazzy multi- instrumentalist next to Koan, who has studied jazz, reggae, pop, country, and rock! He brings to the Mighty Koan stage, a saxophone, trumpet, bass guitar and keyboards. Mr. Boreen hails from Saskatchewan, Canada and has studied music his entire life. We are fortunate to hear his passion weave between his many styles while intertwining with the Mighty Koan’s enthusiastic repertoire.
